Laser Tech Tips - Dust Collection Filter Plates
  1. Introduction

Dirty Dust Collection Filters can be cleaned using different techniques, depending on the amount of dust on the filter media, the type of dust and the degree of adhesion to the surface.

Care must be taken during cleaning of the filter media to avoid mechanical damage to the media and its coated surfaces. Total immersion or saturation of the filter media may also result in contamination of the internal surface of the elements.
 

  1. Dry Cleaning

Dry Cleaning is preferred over Wet Cleaning when possible.

Dust Filters may be cleaned by carefully rapping, brushing or vacuum cleaning to remove surface dust. In instances where the dust cake is easily released this method may be effective. CAUTION: the sensitive PTFE membrane of the laser filter could be damaged by excessive contact with the filter media!

Preferred method: Adhesive dust may be dislodged by carefully directing a jet of compressed air into the pleats to produce reverse flow through the element. The nozzle must be positioned 5 – 10 cm (2 – 4 inches) above the pleat opening, not inside. Slowly move the nozzle from top to bottom 3 times at each filter panel.

After cleaning the filters, replace the jet tubes, close the door, and restart the filter unit. Check if the differential pressure gauge is below the red line again.

If it is not possible to reduce the differential pressure below the red line it is necessary to replace the dust collection filters with new ones.


This method has several advantages, as there is no need to remove the filters from the dust extractor, the dust remains contained (compared to other methods that involve removing the filters) and the risk of rupturing the PTFE membrane is reduced.

(NOTE: Compressed air is dangerous, protect eyes and face from dust and debris and work in an enclosed area away from other personnel).
 

  1. Washing
Washing is not recommended for dust collection filters used in laser applications.

NOTE: Washing may adversely affect the conductivity and flame retardant properties of antistatic and/or flame retardant qualities. It is not recommended for dust filters where these attributes are essential for safe operation.
 
  1. Storage
New Dust Collection Filters should be stored in their original packing in a weatherproof location not subject to freezing conditions or rapid variations in temperature or humidity.
 
  1. Health and Safety
All the relevant precautions relating to Health and Safety hazards must be taken in relation to the materials encountered and methods used in the cleaning process.
 
 
Note: There is no way to restore filter media by cleaning to a “like new” condition. ANY cleaning that you do is at your own risk. The success of any cleaning depends on your individual plant conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
